An unbiased unsolicited -and whimsical- review of a Black and Decker Dustbuster purchased Dec 2024.
This video is a positive and whimsical review of the Black and Decker handheld Dustbuster from the point of view a dog owner. It's in the Style of a Dr. Suess story. Any person who has had a dog, shedding or not, needs to see this video! I purchased the vacuum so this is my unbiased opinion.
I found the vacuum to be useful for picking up most dry materials brought in, shed from, spread by or chewed by our two dogs. (dust, dirt, hair, tree needles, sand, small pebbles, bits of wood, stuffie guts, bits of cardboard and plastic etc)
____
Pros: I like the fact that the button has to pressed down to keep the machine going as it decreases noise and also saves the battery. Targeted cleaning. The noise is not very loud.
I love that it is lightweight, powerful enough for the job, and cordless. I am much more likely to grab it and use it that dig out the regular vacuum, especially for the small jobs. Interestingly, I find myself using it with either hand, so it's useful for both left and right handed people.
I thought I would prefer the handle being side to side across the machine rather than straight as I had a shoulder injury, but since I don't hold it for long at each use, that has not been an issue at all. In fact, I prefer holding it with one hand.
I have had the machine over a month now and used it at least every other day. The battery has held a good charge. The recharging station can be mounted almost anywhere so it's convenient! We wish we had one years ago!
For CA$40 that we paid for it, it is great value for the money!
Tips for use: Charge the battery for a minimum of 4 hours before using for the first time.
Combine with using a broom or sweeper to reduce back strain, then suck up the piles.
Dump out the receptacle after each use. This keeps the suction strong. If the container is too packed, it does lose suction. As you will see from the video, emptying it is easy!
Only use in the house or you risk bringing in spiders and cob webs from the garage or car.
From a dog training perspective, if your dog is afraid of noises, take time to systematically desensitize her to it over many short periods. Make it fun by pairing it's presence with treats or a toy your dog enjoys. Start with presenting the machine (off) then giving a treat or toy. At a bit of a distance from your dog, press the button once then feed a treat or toy. Repeat and watch to see if your dog shows signs of stress: looking away, turning their head, yawning, stepping back, or attempts to move towards the machine to bite it etc. Always present the machine before delivering the treat. No behavior is expected by the dog other than not being afraid or aggressive. If you see these, take a break and try again, starting at a greater distance, or maybe even with a barrier like a baby gate between your dog and the vacuum to help him feel safe. Only when your dog is comfortable being around it, should you decrease the distance.
Warning: Do not allow family members to chase the dog with it, even if they think it is funny. The experience of being chased by a noisy monster is not fun for most dogs. Also, do not use it to directly vacuum the dog.
As you can see in the video, my collie mix dog is quite curious about it and it becomes a positive experience because she gets good things (a toy in one case) when she is near it. My other dog is 16 years old and partly deaf but is also not afraid of it.
The Dustbuster is great starting step to prepare your dog for the sight, sound and movement of a larger vacuum.

Thanks. Good video. However the website link is no longer valid. It says it’s registered
Hi June, I have added a more current website. Have fun!
Never knew you were such a poet, Donna! Very delightful! Heidi B
LOL! The ryming was fun!
Very clever!
Thanks!
Now this is a commercial type video that I found highly amusing....so these companies should hire you if they have products that they want to pitch to,the doggy people!!
Aww! Thanks! LOL!
This is awesome!
I love this video!
Aww. Thanks! It was fun to make!
Cute and very creative. Much more whimsical than my dust pan. 😂
LOL!
How sweet and clever! Never thought of creating my own sort of “paint by numbers” in this way! What a special gift one of these would make for any dog lover. 👍❣️
They were fun to make!
thank you! my dog loves them crunchy! now I know how to make the thicker style, I want to try to get them crunchy but also chewy....the store bought ones are always so short (they are called sweet potato fries) that I worry about her choking and lso they are sometimes too hard and i worry about her breaking a tooth. About to start a batch! added cinnamon to half while on drying rack!
Great idea about the cinnamon!
I wanted to add this tip: for smooth pavement, consider bracing the stool-I use my feet. A stool that slips is scary and unsafe! :-/ I keep looking at buying or making a dog ramp instead-but they look so awkward to use & stow away!
Yes, a great tip. Unless the stool is low and super stable like a platform. :)
@ After watching I remembered we had a collapsible shower stool for an elderly family member. I got it out and adjusted it to its lowest height. Turns out with its increased width it’s just right for tucking into that angle of the back passenger door of our little truck! Its surface is also slightly cupped, which can only help. I still need to attach a non-skid surface to the top, but it’ll work better than the grooming tack stool we were using. Glad we stumbled on this video to get our thinking brains in gear!
@@earth2wendy Yay! So glad you started looking around the house for something that mouth work!
Love this how-to for teaching a new behavior in incremental steps. NOT forcing the dog is just the point! Using a stool is smart! It saves OUR back, not having to lift our dog up and down, which we do to save THEIR joints and confidence. We (unwisely) didn’t train stool use, but just “went for it.” Sure, it worked out. But taking the time to train it like this would have reinforced both their trust and our training skills! Hope to get more things right with my next dog, thanks to tutorials like this! (And Laura’s, Emily’s, Kay’s, Susan’s…) Thanks so much!
Yes, taking the time to figure out what works for you and the dog and how to teach it is often the challenge in today's time-crunched life!
What a neat and truly preoccupying to give to your dog.....this is goitng to be useful......THANK YOU!!
Another thing we've been doing is to make big knot, shove it in and let a long tail hang out. The dog uses the tail to pull the toy around. You can use it to play tug then too!
I just might take your challenge but not until 2025.....itll probably never end up on UA-cam cuz I suck at figuring out the tech stuff, but itnis winter here and my busy season at work....my 9.5 year old ECS is bored.
That would be great. Even just report back how you do! :)
Game on, Donna! Here's a vid of 14-y-o Trip's effort: ua-cam.com/video/lsJHipbA2GA/v-deo.html Thanks so much for the idea! Trip was delighted by the extra attention in the midst of the busy holiday season!
Nailed it! The tail wag tells me so! :)
@@dogsexplainedThank you for getting us clicking again.❤😊
Thanks so much!! I buy these and they are rather pricey. Freezing is a great idea!
You are very welcome!
Dehydrated lungs s the best!
We haven't tried those yet! Still looking for a local source.
This is a great idea Donna. And your dogs seem to love them!
Very impressive!
Thanks! She is such a social dog, this is a huge breakthrough! The behavior has "stuck" since this was done several months ago as well.
She is such a sweetheart!
Yes, and people love to talk to her and pet her too! Lassie! LOL!
Bro it’s so weird how dogs react when they don’t like it. My dog laid down and didn’t want treats. So weird
Some are biologically sensitive to high pitch, some have a medical condition affecting their ears and others learned to be afraid. I've had two dogs who were on electronic fence collars before I got them. They were afraid of anything that sounded metallic from static electricity to clickers etc. One of them I used this approach to have her over come it quickly (made a positive association with high value food). With my first boy, I didn't know how to do this at the time.
Thank you for such a clearly laid out video with a variety of environment applications!
You are very welcome.
Nice
This is awesome! ".....the Shadow knows!"
Thanks! LOL!
Thank you for the video. 😊
Have you trained her to ignore other dogs on a leash in 2:45? What would you do if she went to approach the other dog?
Yes, we have worked on that as a separate issue. There are many options of what to have her do.
How nice was that a plan breeding or was she a shelter dog? She’s really lovely.
Oops litter. Was rehomed to us as she is too sensitive to be with someone with anxiety.
@@dogsexplained how are you saying her first owner was very anxious
Can I ask what feeding tube you’re using? I try a couple different ones in my food gets stuck. The hole is probably not that big but yours looks very big so can I ask what you’re using thank you.
Coughlan camping tubes.
Thank you I just ordered them because my dog eats a raw dog food and that would be great for his training so I don’t have to get it all over my hands and wear a glove
@@watchmoivies123 I feed raw as well but do cook some things. They are great for cold weather too!
How long is your long line 50 feet
It's about 30 feet of paracord. Definitely need to use gloves to protect your hands! I use a longer one for fields where she gets more freedom.
OK, I have some things similar but it’s like a plastic that they make horse bridles and reins with and it’s really really nice
@@watchmoivies123 Biothane? I find the recommended width for a dog this size heavy for a long line and it sticks to the pavement when wet. :(
@@dogsexplained well the one I have is viper bane leash 3/8 thick it’s very thin and I have a Border Collie so I don’t worry about him breaking it and I’ve used it in the wet and dirt and everything and I don’t notice it sticking so maybe just the one I have doesn’t stick but maybe on a hole they do but thank you very much
Sorry, viper biothane
Do you do any sports like nose, work or agility or obedience?
Yes, I have some old videos for Rally, Treibball, a little of agility (but not competitive). Check out my playlists.
Oh, I had a collie as a child he was the sweetest can be
Clover certainly fits the bill for a typical collie even though she's half collie! Many people love to meet her and trigger similar memories!
Oh so she’s only 50% collie. What’s the other part? Is it sheltie I don’t see much of anything else other than type maybe golden but I don’t think golden. She’s adorable. Now I’m dying to know what else she’s mixed with.
@@watchmoivies123 Dad was Rough Collie, Mom was a border collie/Aussie mix. All herding breed for sure.
Very attentive. Looks like she has a good connection with you.
I love how she looks at you with sweet affection when she checks in
Hi there
Update: Clover learned to generalize this behavior to 5 different species of berries. She started with the Saskatoon berries beside our driveway and checking for them became a daily ritual before our walk while they were in season. Then she switched to salal at the park entrance, then non-native blackberries while I picked mine and huckleberries! She also tried rose hips (didn't like them). It appears she's a berry fan!
What a cutie!
I'm sure that's fine if the dog only has a few ticks but what if they have dozens? And what about ticks too small for that device to grab?
If the tiny ones are not embedded, then spread the fur use tape or a lint roller to pull them off. If you have too many of any size to manually remove, talk to your vet. A dip can remove them.
The place where I know the people take the ticks from there hand ✋ hehehe. 😂😂 It's call nag.lan.
I know this is 12 years old and I have watched this always with excitement after the dog show part was done. Due to disability now I no longer do the dog show stuff. But still try to find fun activities with my dogs. Since I started with scent detection work, am wondering if this might be something I/we could pull off. As it is mostly walker or power wheelchair now? We do have teams, but always a long drive away and not sure how fit one has to be as a handler.
After the initial training, the handler pretty much stands at the back and cheers the dog on. If you can tug or feed your dog, you should be able todo it. One consideration might be the surface the trial is held on. Some do it on his fuel which might be a challenge with a walker or wheelchair unless it's designed for off-road.
@@supernaturalbc2008 Yah that is what it looks like watching. As long as I can get help while still training what you do I suppose. Indoor events should be fine, but outdoors might be an issue. I have a zero turn for agility. But not really off road. Might just play at home and than see what a club says...
So how can i remove small tick
You have a better chance with the tick removers than tweezers as the slit gets very small. Just make sure you have slid the tick as far to the end as you can, then twist.
Your dogs are so beautiful
Thank you!
Looks gross, but I bet the dogs LOOVE it
Is there a step by step for this? Should I be treating when the dog looks at the toy or me?
Did you watch the. video? It shows how to make the transition from looking at the object to the looking at the environment..
Cute video! My American Shepherd dogs pick black raspberries in our back yard every summer. They are very discriminating. They have learned to sniff until they find the ripe ones and only pick those. It must be a bit prickly for their noses but it must be worth it.
Thanks! She seems to picking up that skill quickly. A healthy treat for everyone! :)
Very nice idea. Look how she has perked up
I can't get blood, what other liquids or things would you recommend?
Meat flavoring like beef bullion or even chicken soup. Just add a bit more oatmeal.
Thanks!@@dogsexplained
Where do you get blood from?
@@creatureconnectionsba When you buy liver or heart. Often the bags or containers of meat are full of them! Ask the butcher as well. They drain it off as most people don't want to pay for it.
Thank you!
You are very welcome!
Love it! Thank you!
This is so smart!!! Thank you!!!
You are very welcome!
My dog recently has been missing the step with her hind leg occasionally. I think I'm going to give my vet a call and ask him of he thinks I should try this first or bring her in for a quick check first. My intuition says this is the answer.
It depends on you dog's age, breed and previous physical history what this could be. A skipped step might indicate a fluxating patella, arthritis, torn tendon, stretched muscle or even neural degeneration. Lucy has a bit of arthritis in one knee and slow neurological degeneration. We first noticed a skip on one rear leg every now and then. We suspect that was the arthritis showing itself at 14.5 yrs of age. A year later, we definitely see a change in her gait and her speed from what it used to be.
👍👍
Can use this after spay?
Yes as long as the specific activity doesn't strain the abdominal muscles.
